Our Site Supervisors’ Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) course is an accredited CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) course and is the ideal first step for site supervisors, providing an understanding of the relevant health, safety, welfare, environmental, and legal issues that could impact their role. The key takeaway from this classroom course is that safety is an integral part of effective site supervision.
The United Kingdom Contractors Group endorses the SSSTS course as the standard for all supervisors who work on UKCG sites
Who is this SSSTS course suitable for?
Our Site Supervisor Course is designed for site managers, agents, and other construction industry professionals. These people may have responsibility for planning, organising, controlling, monitoring, and administering groups of workers.
The SSSTS course is aimed at people who have – or expect to acquire – supervisory responsibilities in the construction industry.
Course Programme
- The Health and Safety at Work Act and HSE regulations.
- Control measures and risk assessments.
- Legal responsibilities of site supervisors.
- Specific site issues that challenge supervisors daily.
- Effective toolbox talks (a short presentation on a specific area of health and safety, presented by the candidates).
- Supervision of occupational health.
- Behavioural safety.
Learning outcomes
The SSSTS course will discuss what is expected of you and how your duties will contribute to the safety of the workplace.
By the end of the classroom course, you will be able to:
- Understand the health and safety problems within the industry.
- Understand how health and safety law is structured and how it applies to site supervisors.
- Identify how a supervisory role fits in with the management structure in controlling site safety.
- Carry out risk assessments and understand the need for method statements.
- Carry out effective site inductions, toolbox talks and method statement briefings.
- Monitor site activities effectively.
- Understand the importance of timely intervention and identify bad practices.
- Recognise when a site is safe, efficient, economical, productive and environmentally friendly.
Assessments
The SSSTS course consists of 2 assessments:
- An examination paper, with 22 multiple-choice questions and 3 short written questions.
- A trainer review.
The trainer review considers the candidates contribution and behaviour over the 2 days, and includes 3 elements:
- Candidate performance in group exercises.
- Candidate engagement – providing answers/suggestions during the course.
- Toolbox talk completion – the candidate must prepare and deliver a 5-minute toolbox talk.
Certification
The certificate will only be awarded if you attend both days in the correct order and participate during the course.
Attendance will preferably be taken on consecutive days, but you can also finish the modules within two weeks of each other.
If, for any reason, you cannot attend the course on consecutive days, the two days must be within the same two-week period. If this is not possible for sickness or other reasons, you will need to enrol on a new course with the same stipulations.
Your SSSTS certificate is valid for five years. However, we recommend taking a refresher course every three years to keep up with any changes in technology, environmental management, cultural behaviour, and legislation.
Interactive Homework
Interactive homework To help you prepare for the assessment and trainer review, you will receive homework assignments and interactive revision materials covered by the course fee. The interactive revision questions are based on actual assessments and include immediate feedback. You can use these materials as many times as you wish. The preparation for the toolbox talk will be assigned as homework at the end of day one, and the presentation will take place on day two.
Next steps
After completing our site supervisor training course, you can progress to the five-day Site Management Safety Training Scheme. Site managers, agents, surveyors, and managers are all likely to find this next level of training valuable.
SSSTS candidates are encouraged to refresh their knowledge every three years with the SSSTS Refresher course.
